Choosing The Right Dog: Secrets to Making a Wise Choice

By: Steven Ross

Have you been thinking about getting a dog? Certainly puppies are very cute and will provide you with months of fun. And before you know it, that little bundle of joy will grow into a full sized dog, providing you with years of friendship and companionship. But, did you know that sometimes it's not a good idea to get a puppy? And without a doubt, it's important to never rush the decision and make a bad choice.

Before you go and get a puppy, there are many things you need to consider.

Now, as we all know so very well, there are big differences between the various breeds of dogs. As you pick up a book on dogs what do you see? Well of course, we see differences in size, temperament, energy, behavior, and intelligence. One of the most important factors for consideration is how the dog is with children. This is because some dogs tend to be more passive while others are more aggressive.

This is one of the most important criteria that you should consider before choosing a dog. Do you have children in the family? Then, you must think carefully about what dog to choose. Don't just choose what your children want. Many children see the movie 101 Dalmatians, and immediately want a Dalmatian puppy. Unfortunately, once the little Dalmatian puppy grows up into a full-size dog, the problems begin. This type of dog has a lot of energy and they make very good pets but they do far better around adults because they can be very aggressive around children.

So what happens? Many of these poor dogs are thereafter given away to the pound or other adoption agencies.

When choosing a puppy you always have to think about what type of dog the puppy is destined to become. Don't just see a cute puppy and automatically get it. Think about how big the dog will become, how much energy the dog will have, the territorial nature of the breed, and many other factors.

What are your wants, needs, desires, and housing situation? Do you live in a big house or a small apartment? Why would you ever consider a puppy that would grow into a large dog if you live in a very small home? Also, it's important to consider where you live. Do you live in the city? Do you live in the country? Remember that certain breeds of dog need lots of room to run around and need lots of attention from their owners.

Lastly, let us remember that being a responsible dog owner isn't only about fun and games. There is a lot of work involved in training them and giving them the proper attention that they need. Don't be the type of dog owner of that fails to give the dog enough attention. Do you know what happens when a dog is bored? They find ways to destroy things, for example chewing on your favorite rug and furniture.

In conclusion, you need to do your homework before choosing the correct kind of puppy to bring home. You need to be patient and make sure that your choice is in line with your personal and family's needs. Don't forget to look ahead to what the puppy will grow into. By doing so you can ensure work that your choice for a new puppy will be the right choice for you and your family.
